The civil justice system uses money as the means of compensating people for their harms and losses. Some would say it’s as simple as the Pottery Barn rule: You break it, you pay for it.
In most civil cases, all that is available is an award of money. In rare cases, we can get a court order that will stop future harm, but that doesn’t happen very often. We tell you this at the front end because we don’t want you to have unrealistic expectations.
But it’s not as bleak as all that because payment of money is one means of teaching a lesson. And for corporations, it is truly the only way to get their attention. You can bet that when a defendant pays money, they learn about safety and following the law. Money matters to them—they don’t take the loss of money lightly.
There are some other things that you should know about us. We won’t handle every case. Sometimes it’s because a case shouldn’t be brought. Sometimes it’s because we’re already overcommitted. Even so, we thought you might want more information about how you can find a good lawyer and what lawyers like us consider in deciding whether we will handle your matter.
